JENSEN BEACH (USA)- A beach café in the Florida town of Jensen Beach will serve shark meat this Saturday. In this dubious way the owner wants to commemorate that he was attacked by shark exactly two years ago.
Kona Beach Cafe will be serving 50 pounds of shark meat and feature live music to mark the anniversary. The fiesta is called Kona Bites Back.
The restaurant is catching some heat over his plan. On the restaurant’s Facebook page, some reactions are quite fierce with one person even saying they hope the shark bit the owners leg off.
Shark meat is legal in the United States.
The owner reacts: “Don’t know if you’ve heard, but apparently some misinformed folks think that our yearly Kona Bites Back event is promoting the killing of sharks. For the record, we’re serving, for one day only, a few pounds of shark meat that we purchase from a US certified food vendor who also regularly supplies us with hotdogs, burgers and other yummy things.”
The restaurant will not be serving shark fins, “nor would we ever serve shark fins, in spite of the disgusting photos and remarks extremists have passed around the web”, says the owner. “Lighten up, people – it’s gonna be a fun day! And we hope that all our great customers come out and show us that they, at least, have a sense of humor!”
