EL PORT DE LA SELVA (SPAIN)- It was about 20 years ago that Catalan fishermen caught a big thresher shark off the Costa Brava. Yesterday fishermen of the tiny town of Port de la Selva brought home 4,5 meter big thresher shark, a protected species that is normally found in tropical waters and is very difficult to see.
The shark was caught close to the shores of the Cap de Creus, close to different tourist beach resorts. The little boat, designed for much smaller catches, had to radio in for help to get the shark to the port.

Experts say that the last thresher shark in Catalan waters was seen over 20 years ago. Thresher sharks live in the tropical oceans of the world, at depths of 500 meters and also west of the Mediterranean, in the area near the Atlantic Ocean.
Its maximum length is 5 meters in this case measuring 4.54 meters , with 2’25 and 2’29 trunk – tail and weigh between 200 and 300 kilos .
Scientists of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona will do investigation on the shark.
