shark netsDUNSBOROUGH (AUSTRALIA)- Shark nets that protect swimmers, but don’t kill sharks and other sealife. That’s what the state government of Western Australia is installing for the summer at the old Dunsborough beach.

The nets that run 100m out from the shore at the popular South West beach and 300m parallel to the beach cost 165,000 Australian dollars. The state government establishes the shark enclosure at old Dunsborough beach this summer as part of several measures to protect beach users from sharks.

If the new nets really just keep out the sharks without damage, remains to be seen.

Premier Colin Barnett announced the enclosure system. He said it would

It would act as an enclosure to protect swimmers rather than the shark net system used off Sydney beaches which trap and kill sharks. It is similar to systems used on the Gold Coast.

Mr Barnett said the Dunsborough net was one of several shark mitigation strategies to be used over the summer.
